President-elect Obama supports dramatic cuts in global warming pollution

by Fresh Energy

By J. Drake Hamilton, science policy director, Fresh Energy

This November, Americans delivered a powerful message to Washington: it’s time for change. After eight years of federal global warming denial and delay on climate progress, incoming president Barack Obama—in a speech on November 18, 2008—signaled that he will lead a clear change in the federal government’s approach to global warming. The President-elect noted that his administration intends to lead the international community in fighting the climate crisis. Obama’s speech made it clear that global warming is a serious and urgent problem. We can’t afford to wait. The solutions to the problems in our economy and environment hinge on investing in a new energy economy. Obama said he will protect our national security by cutting our dependence on oil, put millions of Americans to work in new green jobs, and reduce global warming pollution by at least 80 percent.
