New era, massive opportunity, same mission

by Fresh Energy

by Erick Boustead, RE-AMP Commons coordinator, Fresh Energy

As a new chapter is underway not only for America but for the entire world, the big question is how much can be accomplished before attention spans become strained. Hope is a very powerful feeling, but it can also trick us into becoming ignorant of history and human nature. The past few weeks, however, have been testament that the future we have been fighting tooth and nail for could be well on its way.

Specifically, disparate to the tragic coal sludge spills we witnessed back in December, proposed coal-fired power plants all over the nation are now being thrown to the mat. Whether or not they will get back up for another round is to be determined, but the members of the “No More Coalition” have at least bought some time.

Now, as progressives and climate skeptics jockey for the rights to the upcoming federal stimulus package, we can do much more than hope it will include sincere efforts to build infrastructure for rational means of transportation, create training and educational programs for millions of green jobs, develop a just mechanism for capping and reducing carbon emissions, and provide plenty of incentives to build the new energy economy. Get into it!
