Last week, Jim Lyons of Oxfam America spoke at the 21st annual Nobel Peace Prize Forum at St. Olaf College in Northfield. The topic of this year’s forum was “Striving for Peace: A Climate for Change.” Dr. Richard Alley, professor of Geosciences at Penn State and contributing scientist with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, gave the keynote address at the forum, while Fresh Energy’s J. Lyons’ speech was rebroadcast today on Minnesota Public Radio’s Midday. Lyons highlighted the need for immediate action on climate change to protect the international developing world and vulnerable communities, who will be greatly impacted by the effects of climate change.

Not only will climate change impact poor and developing nations, but Lyons points out that according to IPCC estimates, if climate change pushes the global temperature up another 3.6 degrees we could lose between 5-20 percent of the global GDP. He emphasized the urgent need to pass climate change legislation to put our country and the entire world back on the right track.
